VISUAL STUDIES & UPROCK NARRATIVES: DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGE R. MERCADO
George R. Mercado | Documentary Photographer Par Excellence
I'm a South Florida based documentary photographer that specializes in run-and-gun documentary, editorial and portraiture work from a fresh perspective. I've been creating compelling multimedia content in a variety of visual markets for over 25 years, with the last 13 years dedicated to honing my skills in documentary and commercial photography.
The experiences that shaped my childhood now inspire my work as a photographer. Urban explorations, people, social interests and hip hop/counter culture are my subjects of choice. I got my creative start writing graffiti and illustrating comics as a teen, and eventually studied computer animation and graphic design at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale. I took a break from the creative grind in 2003 to get involved in social work. The birth of my daughter in 2005 inspired me to pick up a camera for the first time, and I've been shooting with purpose ever since. When I'm not shooting, I co-direct an agency dedicated to improving the lives of the developmentally disabled in the Treasure Coast.
